Chanterelle Season

So I am a little behind on blogging the adventures of the summer ( I feel like I blinked and it was gone)… but I though I would share some pictures and words from the past two months.

Better late than never right?

 

 

First off let me introduce you to Christophe, He is a friend we met in Golden BC last winter who showed up in Nova Scotia for a month long bike trip. He is a chef from france and worked at Eagles Eye restaurant with Jason at Kicking horse.

While he has been in our area we had a few adventures with him.

 

 

 

 

 

While he was staying with us at the beginning of his trip he was really excited that it was Chanterelle season. I always wanted to forage for mushrooms, but it is very hard to find any one willing to teach you about it. Many people are close to the bluff about their secret locations and many would prefer that you live in fear of dying from eating the wrong mushroom, rather than share the crop. I jumped at the chance to go out with someone who knew the deadly from the delicious so I could learn the secrets of mushroom hunting.

We found a couple of (now super secret) spots that Christophe thought might be good and started hunting. I became alright at combing the forest floor looking for the bright golden spots. More often than not I found dead leaves but it was really exciting when I actually found a Chanterelle!

  

We brought them home and Christophe taught me how to clean and cook them. We eat chanterelles and Lobster for dinner and made a delicious lobster stock with the shells. Christophe taught me to make homemade mayonnaise to eat with the lobster, Amazing!  I love nature!
